Brunei, a small rich independent
country within the Borneo islands of Malaysia reached its zenith between the
15th and 17th century when it ruled coastal north-western Borneo and the
southern Philippines. Colonial expansions, internal Royal strife and piracy
were some of the main reasons for Brunei's decline. Brunei then became a
British protectorate in 1888 and only gained independent as recent as 1984.
